April 2008 GLADNET Meeting

The GLADNET Spring Meeting 2008 was held, 21st-25th April at the IFW Dresden in Germany. Training courses and Gladnet sessions took place in the conference room at IFW (Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research)

For ESRs and ERs training sessions were performed from Monday 21st to Wednesday 23rd; on Thursday 24th, in the general session, all ESRs and ERs gave 10 minutes talk about their research topics.

Gladnet session for  up-dating the ESR's mobility plans and a general discussion about rules and training reports has been carried out on Friday 25th.

The week started with a welcome and an introduction to the IFW. Later different aspects have been developped during the lectures given by senior scientists about modern developments in material science, glow discharge phenomena, superconductivity for power applications, ToF-MS for elemental  analysis by Gary Hieftje, RF discharges, SIMS, ToF-SIMS, Auger, XPS and analytical aspects as effect of molecular gases in GDS.

During the course we visited the GD, Auger, XPS and superconductivity laboratories of the IFW

An interesting and useful workshop has been led by Dave Griffiths (ULMET) in order to suggest to ESR's how they could improve their communication skills. As an exercise all had to make a presentation about with their home town, city and region.

Because of all the information absorbed during the scientific courses, an excursion was organised on Wednesday afternoon to the national park Sächsische Schweiz where we visitied Neurathen, a medivial castle.

After this visit we went on a trip to the Schwedenlöcher road. After this long walk we went to a restaurant inside the Altrathen castle where we had a very nice meal and where the additional social event organised by Varvara Efimova took place. For this special event a  song was Gladnet written and performed.

On Thursday we had our last Gladnet dinner together in a beautiful restaurant in an old cigarette factory.
